She will be sworn in after Justice Breyer retires at the end of the current term.
In a 53-47 vote, Ketanji Brown Jackson, a 51-year-old appeals court judge with nine years experience on the federal bench, was confirmed by the Senate to sit on the United States Supreme Court. Presiding over the vote was Vice President Kamala Harris. The judge joined President Biden at the White House to watch the vote as it came in.
Jackson will take her seat after Justice Stephen Breyer retires this summer.
Jackson will be the third black justice, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, and the sixth woman. She will join three other women, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan Amy Coney Barrett – meaning that, for the first time, four of the nine justices will be women.
Once sworn in, Jackson will be the second-youngest member of the court after Barrett, 50. She will join a court in which no one is yet 75, the first time that has happened in nearly 30 years.
